Lou Gehrig, The Luckiest Man

Page history last edited by MarcS 3 years ago

Lou Gehrig has accomplished many tasks that set the bar for the players of his time, yet his play on the field is only a small portion of why Lou is one of Basbeballs greats. Aside from his amazing accolades at the plate, he made one of the most insperational speech's in sports hsitory, coming out to the world that he had developed a disease called ALS and stated that he was the luckiest man on the face of the earth.

Gehrig came from a tough childhood as a son of German immigrants, and the only child of 4 to survive in his family. In college he originally played football at Columbia, yet later the manager of the New York Giants advised him to play baseball. He did and a new talent was discovered. In 1925 he was called up to the Yankees and was later given the title of Iron horse after playing 2,130 consecutive games throughout his career.

In 1927, Lou Gehrig and Babe Ruth amased a totall of 107 Homeruns in a season, outhomnering every team in the League but one. They went on to win the Championship in 1927. They did it again in 1928, the season in which Lou won M.V.P of the league. His 184 RBI's in a single season, to this day remains a record. The way Gehrig handled himself as a teamate is now a model for young kids today. He was always behind Babe Ruth in the spotlight, yet he never showed any jelousy, rather he stayed positive and put his team before himself for the better of the Yankees.

Lou Gehrig signifies an American Hero. He was caring person with a heavy heart, an amazing baseball player, and had tremedous success in his field. He set milstones that even our generation, may never see broken. His percervierence for success and hapiness made him the man that he was. Lou Gehrig will always be one of baseball's greats, and on top of that, one of America's most courageous men. His legacy was solidfied with his speech in 1939.
