~HENRY FORD~

By: Kristin Chuba

Period 4

Henry Ford is known as the most famous person is the design of the modern car. Although Ford was not the first to build a self-propelled vehicle with a gasoline engine, he was, however, one of several automotive pioneers who helped this country become a nation of motorists.

In the 1920's Henry Ford gave teenagers reason to drive away from their parents and start a whole new life for people as we know it.  He gave teenagers the freedom that they wanted to get away from their parents.

Early Childhood

This is Henry ford at age 2 and a half as a cute little child. He was not a corpulent child but actually very thin.

  • He diagreed with farm work and beleived that machinary was the answer to their probelms.
  • Ever since the age of thirteen when he was out with his dad and saw a self-powered car he wanted to build his own.

What made him different from other kids was that he had such odium for farm work and instead wanted to work with mechanical things.

This is an example of Ford's first model of the car called the Quadricycle in 1896.

This was Henry Ford's first working automobile.

The Quadricycle consisted of a toolbox seat mounted on a chassis, in front of the engine which powered the four bicycle wheels via 10 feet of bicycle chain. Its two-cylinder engine generated four horsepower and a top speed of 20 mph; it had no brakes and no reverse gear drive and it "stopped" by breaking down on its maiden trip through Detroit.

Early 1900's

The next step for Ford was to make a car that didnt stop in the middle of the raod and that could go in reverse. The next and more promising vehicle that came out was one that stayed around for a while.

This car began Ford's fame in the early 1910's. The model T car was much easier to operate, maintain, and control on those rough roads. It was also resonabily priced and was reliable that it become a hit right away. By 1918 almost half of the cars on the roads were Model T's.

The Roaring 20's

Now what made Henry ford part of the age of inventions in the 1920's was his idea of massive production of cars the automobile assembily line. He though of this idea to produce cars faster and he did so.

Here are just 2 pictures of what the inside of the first industry for mass production of cars looked like. This facility was called the Rouge Plant. Here he paid high wages and helped create a middle class.

At the beginnign of the massive production of cars there was one produced about every hour and a half but by 1922 they were up to producing one Model T every 24 seconds. Here is where you can see the art of invention represents the 1920 perfectly. Before the 1920's there was no way of transportation besides walking and horse and carriges but now they are mas producing cars and everyone owns one. In less than a time of about 20 years we went from having no technology to having an abundance of it flowing through the streets that eeveryone could see.

This time period is also know for enterprising individuals and clearly Henry Ford is a great example.Just to think that he started off with nothing and made this amazing car which is now a neccessity in our lives. Now he didn't only design cars but he came up with mass production of cars which we still use today.

With everyone owning a car it devolps more and more things to be made. Things such as highways, gas stations, and fix-it-shop are now needed. This created more and more jobs for the scoiety which lead to the begginning of modern America with the car and a majority of the people having jobs.

Here are just two examples of cars today which have evolved from Henry Ford's first design.

We can't even imagine what our world would be like without cars today, thats how big an impact Ford made.

( Kristen, the video of Henry Ford is causing the problem on this page. I would suggest that you just set a link to it like I did. When the whole page is done and SAVED! Then you can try embedding it again. Once you have the final page completed and something goes wrong, you can revert to a previous saved version. Mrs. D.)
