Early Age

Bobby Jones was born on March 17th 1902 in Atlanta Georgia.  Bobby was born into a rather wealthy family for the time period.  Due to this wealth the family belonged to many of the elite country clubs and high class establishments in the area.  As a member of many different golf clubs Jones was able to start playing at a very young age.  At the age of 6 he had already won his first tournament which was a Junior Tournament at a nearby club.  By the age of 14 he won the Georgia State Amateur Championship at the Capital City Club in Brookhaven.  Jones later became a member at the club there and remained a member for the rest of his life.  After that first win at the age of 14 it all took off for Jones.  No one ever pictured him to be one of if not the greatest golfer to ever set foot on a Tee Box.  In my next section we will go over some of Jones major championships along with his famed "Grand Slam"

Success On The Course

Jones is probably most famous now-a-days for what is called the "Grand Slam"  The "GS" was when Jones won all 4 of the major golf tournaments of his era.  Those tournaments include the U.S. Open, The British Open, the U.S. Amateur, and the British Amateur.  To this day no one else has been able to accomplish this amazing task. Not even some of the worlds greatest like Sam Snead, Jack Nickolas, Arnold Palmer, or even the very famous TIGER WOODS!!

Along with his "GS" Jones also won 9 other major championships and 9 PGA tour events before retiring in 1930.  Jones also dominated in many other events however they were all not able to be recorded and scores were not able to be seen.

A Man That Played With A Little Bit Of Class!!

Click on the Link below to see actual footage of Bobby Jones sinking a putt to win a 1922 Tournament.  Notice the class that Jones has as he does not celebrate in a immature way and walks right to the hole to retrieve his ball.

As you could see from the video above Bobby Jones not just a good golfer but one that played with a little bit of class.  The USGA's Sportsmanship award is given out every year to the one member of the league that displays the most sportsmanship for the game.  This award is given out in Jones honor.  One example of Jones sportsmanship came in the 1925 U.S. Open during the final round.  As Jones approached the ball he accidentally nudged the ball and moved it from its original lie.  Frusterated with himself he backed away and went up to the scores officials and tild them what happened.  However since no one saw it happen there was no proof and the penalty of two shots did not have to be enforced.  Being the golfer that Jones was he said trust me I did it and accepted the penalty.   Jones ended up losing by one stroke.

Success Off The Course

Bobby Jones was not just a great golfer but a very intelligent student.  Jones got his B.S. at Georgia Tech in 1992 and went on to earn his B.A. from HARVARD in 1924.  After that he went to one year at law school at Emory and passed the bar exam after just one year.  Jones wrote and was featured in many books about golf and even movies about the game.  Many of which are still watched today by the best golfers in the world to try and take from such a great golfer.
